Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is defined as an episodic multisystem disease characterized by extensive inflammatory processes in the blood vessels and connective tissue, as well as the presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) on investigations, especially antibodies to double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA).
